Recipe tips and frequently asked questions

Can I make these with different apples?

Yes you can use whatever type of apple you like, as long as it's one you like to eat.

Can I make these with different fruit?

You can certainly try! Whatever it is needs to be firm enough to cut the shape into and push in the monster's teeth. Pears would also work well!

Can I make these nut free?

Yes you can. Try a different spread such as sunflower seed or a nut-free cocoa spread. For a nut-free alternative for the monster teeth try using pepitas (pumpkin seeds) or sunflower seeds.

Are these vegan or gluten free?

Yes, provided the peanut butter and googly eyes you use are (always check the label) these Halloween apple mouths are both vegan and gluten-free.

Ingredients

Apples: green apples keep these monstertastic but you can use whatever type you like, so long as you like eating them.

Peanut butter: apple and peanut butter is such a classic combination. These work best with smooth peanut butter as it spreads more easily. You can also make this with other nut butter or even chocolate hazelnut spread for a slightly less healthy version.

Edible googly eyes: are a simple way to make monsters. You could also try some raisins instead.

Watermelon: some sliced watermelon makes easy tongues of the monster's mouth. You could also use sliced strawberries.

Slivered almonds: make easy and lovely pointy 'teeth'. You could also try using pepitas (pumpkin seeds) or sunflower seeds.

Lemon juice (not pictured): a little lemon juice keeps these monsters fresh and tasty and stops them from going brown. Pineapple or orange juice also works well if you happen to have any on hand.

How to make apple monsters

Juice the lemon. Cut the apple into quarters. Do not cut off the core or your monsters will fall flat on their face! (I speak from experience :D). Cut the wedge-shaped 'mouth' out of the front of the apple.

Lightly dab the cut apple surfaces with lemon juice (or pineapple or orange juice). Don't add to much juice or your peanut butter won't stick.

Spread both sides of the inside of the apple with peanut butter. Slice the watermelon into tongue shapes and place them inside the mouth.

Gently press the slivered almonds just inside the edge of the apple skin of the apples around the edges of the mouths to form the teeth. I recommend starting with the bottom teeth, and then doing the top ones.

Finally use a little peanut butter to stick on the googly eyes and you're done!

To serve these apple monster mouths pop onto a plate and enjoy! Fabulous for an easy Halloween snack after school, before trick or treating or for a Halloween party. Bootastic!

How to store

These Halloween apple monster mouths are freshest if made just before eating. But along and you use the lemon juice they will keep well at room temperature without going brown for several hours.

I don't recommend putting them in the fridge, they eyes may get condensation and make the colour run.

Apple Monsters

These green apple monsters are an easy and healthy Halloween snack. With just six ingredients they are ready in a flash and perfect for a party or spooky dessert.

Keyword: apple monster bites, apple monster mouths, apple monster mouths for Halloween, apple monster snack, apple monster snacks, apple monster teeth, apple slice monsters, halloween apple monster mouths, Halloween apple mouths, health Halloween snack ideas, monster apple bites, Silly apple bites
Servings: 12 individual monster mouths

Ingredients

  • 3 green apples
  • ½ tablespoon Lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons smooth peanut butter
  • 2 tablespoons slivered almonds *see notes for substitutions
  • 1 small piece watermelon
  • 24 candy googly eyes

Instructions

  • Slice the apples into quarters and slice the core off the back.
  • Slice the mouths into the front of the apples.
  • Juice the lemon and paint all the cut surfaces with lemon juice. This is optional but helps stop the apples from turning brown. Don't put on to much or the peanut butter won't stick.
  • Spread peanut butter on the side of the apple mouths.
  • Slice the watermelon into triangles and place them inside the apple mouths for the tounges.
  • Gently push the slivered almonds in rows on either side of the mouth to form the teeth. I reccommend starting with the bottom two then working on the top.
  • Use a couple of small dabs of peanut butter to stick on the eyes and you're done!

Notes

  • I like green apples as they look the most monster like, but you can whatever eating apples you like.
  • The lemon juice is optional but helps stop the apples from going brown.  A little orange juice or pineapple juice works well too, but I always have lemons on my tree so that's what I use!
  • I like smooth peanut butter, but you can use whatever nut butter you like.  Or for a nut-free alternative use your favourite nut-free spread such as sunflower seed butter.
  • Slivered almonds give lovely pointing teeth.  You can also use pepitas (pumpkin) seeds or sunflower seeds as a nut-free alternative.
