Recipe tips and frequently asked questions

What can I use instead of English muffins?

English muffins keep these mummy pizza English muffins nice and simple. Instead of English muffins you could use mini pizza bases, canned biscuits (the American type, flatten a bit before using), crumpets or mini pizza bread. Basically any small round savoury bread type product!

Can I add other pizza toppings?

You sure can. Some fun extras include pepperoni, mushrooms, strips of capsicum or pineapple before putting on the cheese. I recommend not adding too many extra toppings or the mummy wrappings will end up very bumpy.

Can I make these gluten free?

Yes, you can use gluten free English muffins instead. Check the packet of your other ingredients as well to ensure they are gluten free.

Can I make these dairy free?

Yes you can try using dairy free or vegan cheese or strips of slices chicken or turkey breast if you are ok with meat. You could even try strips of zucchini peeled and cut into strips but I can't promise the kids will eat this!

Ingredients

Ingredients: string cheese, English muffins, pizza sauce, sliced olives.

English muffins: English muffins keep things nice and simple for the pizza base.  You could also use mini pizza bases, crumpets or mini pitta bread.

Pizza sauce: a little pizza sauce keep things easy. If you don't have pizza sauce you can use a little marinara pasta sauce or tomato paste with a dash of herbs and garlic mixed in.

String cheese: is the simplest way to get the long thin strips for the mummy wrappings and tends to hold its shape best. You could also use strips of regular cheese such as cheddar or mozzarella but these won't hold their shape as well.

Sliced olives: are used to make the mummy's eyes. You only need two slices of each so if your kids are not a fan they can easily pick them off!

How to make mummy pizzas

Preheat your oven to 220°C/430°F/200°C fan-forced. Slice the English muffins in half and lightly toast them in a toaster or in the oven. This step is optional but helps make the mini pizzas nice and crispy and reduces the amount of time they need in the oven.

Process shots: slicing open English muffins before toasting, separating string cheese, spreading on pizza sauce, laying on string cheese and pinching off overhang.

Put the muffins onto a baking tray. Spread each of the cut sides of the muffins with pizza sauce.

Pull apart the string cheese into long strips. Lay the cheese strips over the pizza sauce in slightly crisscross patterns to form the mummy wrappings and pinch off the overhang. Leave a gap near the top for the eyes.

Process shots: criss crossing string cheese to form mummy wrappings, adding sliced olive eyes, ready to bake pizzas, baked pizzas with cheese just melted.

Place two olive slices in the gap for the eyes. Bake in the oven for about five minutes, or until the cheese is just melted. Do not overbake or you risk your mummy cheese wrappings melting together.
